Learning to See
Why this class
Over the years, I’ve taken workshops, studied with painters I deeply admire, and collected the lessons that changed the way I draw and paint. Some were big ideas. Others were tiny pieces of advice that suddenly made something click.
Learning to See is an ongoing foundations class for anyone who wants to build stronger drawing and painting skills, whether you’re just beginning or have been painting for years.
We’ll work through the skills I return to again and again in my own studio practice: accurate drawing and proportion, shape and design, value, light, form, color mixing, edges, depth, composition, and painting from life.
We’ll work through these ideas together, with plenty of demonstration, practice, and room to ask questions.
I believe drawing and painting are learned skills. You do not have to arrive already knowing how to do this.
There is a path. Having a guide along it helps.
September Focus
Building a Strong Drawing
Proportion, Measuring & Still Life
Before we think about color, brushwork, or detail, we need a strong foundation.
This month we’ll learn how to look carefully, measure relationships, simplify what we see, and build an accurate drawing from life.
Using simple still-life setups, we’ll explore:
Measuring and proportion
Sightlines, angles, and alignment
Negative shapes and simplifying what you see
Building and correcting a drawing from life
The goal is not perfection. It is learning how to see more clearly and giving yourself practical tools to use to adjust as needed.
